Hon. Leo Zappa
Judge Zappa is the Former Chief Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit and Former Presiding Judge of the Sangamon County Circuit Court where he presided over civil matters for over 21 years until his retirement in 2013. When he was first elected at age 35 in 1992 he was the youngest elected Circuit Judge in the State of Illinois. Currently his practice focuses on the areas of mediation, arbitration and special master appointments.
He served as Presiding Judge of the State Wide Grand Jury for over 10 years and presided over many high profile cases. Prior to joining the bench Judge Zappa practiced with the general practice firm of Long, Morris, Myers & Rabin and with the Sangamon County States Attorney’s Office.
Judge Zappa is active in the legal community and is a former President and Secretary of the Sangamon County Bar Association. He also was a member of the Lincoln Douglas Inn of Courts. Community service involves serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Cerebral Palsy Association and the American Business Club where he serves as President of the Springfield Chapter and Regional Director of an area encompassing Champaign, Danville, Decatur and Bloomington. For many years Judge Zappa taught torts, evidence and contracts for the American Institute for Paralegal Studies and was also a former instructor for the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor School.
